In 1982 Francis Gomila was working as the Town Artist. The Peterborough Development Corporation (PDC) got funding from Eastern Arts Association and Peterborough Arts Council to create the mural. Francis took a photograph of the street and created a mirror image of that photograph, keeping a little bit of a gable end. All of a sudden, the rainbow, which is in the sky, enters this wall and produces these giant flowers which erupt in this rather grey environment. Francis originally intended to introduce fictitious figures into the mural. Whilst painting the mural, Francis chatted to residents who were walking past and asking questions about the work. Everyone had an opinion on what he was doing! He decided to incorporate their portraits into the mural.
