Bernadetta Omondi started creating community groups around 2001 when she saw a need to provide help for those new to the city. When she first arrived in Peterborough, she remembers how she struggled to learn English, find essential services such as the hospital, and even which bins to use for household rubbish. Bernadetta remembers how the established community groups we see in the area today began as a collection of people from different nationalities, all in similar situations of settling into a new country, working together to help each other. What began in people’s backyards evolved into a more structured organisation when people such as the Kennedys gave their support as well, offering the Beehive as a place for communities to use.
